though I’m just passing by, this is such a beautiful comment, Rick, it stopped me in my tracks!

Congrats on publishing your big long awaited essay Becky!!!! 🙌 I think the “ugly phase” is literally the reason I don’t draw or paint, because I’m not sure if I can ever… pull it out of the ugly phase… actually, on further reflection, it’s not even a phase, it’s a permanent state…. I feel like writing also has an “ugly phase” (peri-first draft), but it’s a much more fun process sharpening and trimming the edges into relief for that one 😆

Thanks so much Clare. Haha I think we are more used to "ugly phase" writtten drafts than "ugly phase" paintings. I'm still working through the latter :)

Loved the journey of honing the craft. I think creating (any craft) is it's own joy and purpose rather than the output. AI will industrialize this for sure like many other crafts that got industrialized by the industrial revolution but that wouldn't stop people from still building their own furniture, making handmade pottery or taking out an old film camera to shoot.

Very very true. It's going to be hard to give up joy!
