Thank you for this Becky. I'm taking a lot of nourishment from this tone you've just rolled out. I feel like you just invited me into your house for tea and now I'm more relaxed. Great perspective on creating our art. It's quite a counterpoint from the unconscious drive to create some epic, amazing or perfect work. It's as though we're imagining that we'd have to be a super-performer to find love and happiness, and we project all of that on the path of our creativity. But really, what most of us are really looking for is relationship. And human relationship is easily produced by being ourselves, being authentically good enough, and then we discover that perfectionism just doesn't need to be the driving force of our art. Sustainable sharing from a relaxed creative center can take its place. I really love this.
Thanks for your thoughts, Rick. What a great perspective it is that creativity is a projection of the need to be authentic, to be ourselves. I love how humane all of this is.
whew. this one was so good I had to double back to rediscover, reread, and reshare.
I want to let you know that this little banger kicked my little butt into gear. I've been so consumed with "outcome-driven" priorities that I let my Substack collect dust in its corner, and the longer I ignored it, the harder it became to approach it.
stepping back into the Substack world is so damn rewarding. thank you Becky for reminding me why I came here in the first place.
As a "corporate girlie," I love the phrase "Corporate baddie." 😂
This was so helpful to read, Becky. The pressure to post a banger/masterpiece essay is preventing me from publishing period. And the thought about creating lite art and publishing smaller pieces is helping me overcome my resistance. Thank you for the encouraging nudge :)
Wow, this was an absolute banger. Sums up my own evolving approach to creation so so well. Seriously felt seen here.
"One day, one of my reps might become a masterpiece. Or perhaps they’ll all just lay there for the future to discover as a documentation of an ordinary life."
I started making instagram videos and it seems like no one gives a f*ck besides my mom so I decided just to have fun with it, put more of my personality in and let go of expectation.
I was sad to hear about the therapy session. I'm not trained but I am a good listener. Here to listen if you ever need someone :)
Thanks, Tommy. I've been really enjoying your reels, too. It's such a great window to what you and your brother are up to. Hope you continue to have fun with it until it's no fun no more :)
Thanks for your offer too, it's really sweet of you. I'll definitely ping you if I'm up for a chat. You are DEFINITELY a good listener!

Haha I appreciate that. Work in progress. Trying to just be more myself in them. More jokes and side comments & my personality.
Sending good vibes :)
