Really enjoyed the life circumstance that inspired this essay, and the way you brought us through the experience, Becky. I love your work, and am happy to beta read at any time!

Have been contemplating on times when the math isn’t mathing. I’m curious what math maths in your life right now.

Oh man I've been really thinking what "fun/creative activity" math is mathing. Like is writing mathing more than painting?? I'm figuring that out

Love the shift from all cylinders on fire to 'okay, Netflix isn't so bad' and being ambitious about your hobbies/life as well

So much more fun to be ambitious of stuff that's actually delightful!

Excellent piece, but I do have a question between - mapo tofu, nasi goreng, Hainanese chicken rice which is the best one to start with trying to make at home?

If you've got a rice cooker, you can make hainanese chicken rice in it - rice and chicken all in one go :)

I experience the same with my job. Almost exactly the same. I am always told my yearly merit increases are above average and it is literally like 0.5%, just like you. I have a master's from Johns Hopkins. Not to promote myself, but I curate degrowth.global and recently posted the same concept you are discussing, "A Note: Lose Your Career Building Skills as a Practice of Degrowth"

https://www.tilley.blog/a-note-lose-your-career-building-skills-as-a-practice-of-degrowth/ - we are on the same page

Wow we really are. I love this ending: Degrowth is having a conscience. Carry that over into your career. Be steady. Be careful. Be everything.

The mode of your forced slow-down is about three times more productive than the rest of the planet. Your work ethic is astounding. Glad you are finding a work/bonus balance. : )

It's amazing how much energy you have! I have learn to also not go "above and beyond" (guess which big American company that uses this tagline with its employee) after 2 years of working, and I never look back. I became an independent contractor after and I work only the hours I am paid for. I do have a knack for spending all my free time for leisure though :D
