Yes! My number one criteria now for working somewhere or on a project is the people. Great bosses and peers MAKE the job. Someone who has your back and sticks up for you is so important for your own growth. I love this idea of going for coffee, out of the formal interview setting. I’ve learned I need to trust my instincts too. Sometimes I like the person, but I have a sense the fit isn’t right. Also, you should read “The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle” if you enjoy mysteries. It has absolutely nothing to do with your Evelyn book (though I have it and must read!). They just happened to come out around the same time 😂
Yes to instincts!! I feel like we were taught to rationalize / have a biz justification for everything but instincts are coming back to the forefront for a lot of us
"made me realized I hate being at the receiving end of email sequences."
Same here unless I sign up for a 5-day email course or something. I need to rethink my approach now that I'm making small pivots. Thanks for that point :)
Have you found coffee alternatives for remote roles? I totally agree that the manager makes or breaks the job, but i haven’t found a remote replacement
That's a real good question. I haven't thought of that... What I have done is have zoom calls for my reference checks with my future boss's former team members and they're usually kind enough to indulge if someone introduced you both.
Great post. Coffee with future boss is a must. And if your future boss is at all opposed to this or doesn’t execute well on the coffee, big red flag. If he / she doesn’t represent well in the recruiting phase, think about what it’ll look like irl.

Clearly Evelyn has seven lives!

starting to think that “do I like this or nah?” is going to be a REALLY strong filter now

Will let you know when I have the answer!
I find myself asking on a similar thread 'would I invite this person for dinner to my home?'
I wish I had asked myself that in past jobs and internships - it would have simplified choices much faster
That's a really great gut check question

So true!
